KALISPELL - The City of Kalispell is another step closer in their goal of transforming the heart of the city with the selection of a design team for their new pedestrian trail and linear park.

The City Council selected Alta Planning and Design and KLJ Engineers to design and construct the new trail and linear park that will stretch from the overpass on Highway 2 all the way to Meridian.

The rail line once served 30 or more businesses but today it serves just two:
C-H-S, Cenex Harvest States, a Fortune 100 company, and Northwest Drywall. Both are currently in the process of relocating to the new Glacier Rail Park, a rail-served industrial park under construction on the northeast edge of the city.

Kalispell City Council on Monday approved the selection of Alta Planning and Design with KLJ Engineers to design the Kalispell Trail and Complete Street project as part of the Core Area redevelopment plan.
The project includes the redesign of downtown after the railroad tracks that split Kalispell are torn out and the Glacier Rail Park is constructed on the west end of town.

According to the city’s request for qualifications on the project, the existing rail line running through the city will be removed next year, and in 2020 the new Kalispell Trail and Complete Street connection will be built. The overall project will cost an estimated $21 million. About half is coming from a U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER grant, with the other half matched by funds from Kalispell’s tax-increment finance district.

The Kalispell City Council selected Alta Planning and Design and KLJ Engineers to design and construct a new rail trail through downtown Kalispell. The council selected the contractors at its April 2 meeting.
The trail will stretch from Woodland Park west to Meridian Road along the former Great Northern Railway right-of-way. The owner of the tracks, BNSF Railway, has filed to abandon the rails through town and trains will stop running into Kalispell once the new Glacier Rail Park is completed east of town off Whitefish Stage Road.
