Questions Asked

Q. Have you talked with the railroad about the Core & Rail Redevelopment?

A. Yes, teams from BNSF, Watco and Mission Mountain Rail have played an integral role in planning for the Core & Rail Redevelopment. Each rail entity is supportive. BNSF is contributing $500,000 toward the creation of the trail and WATCO has committed $200,000 towards the Rail Park.
Q. When will the tracks be removed and the trail be built?

A. Completion of the trail and removal of the tracks is the final phase of the Core & Rail Redevelopment. It is currently slated for completion in 2021.
Q. Will the trail connect to anything?

A. The trail will serve as a mainline of connection for independent trail systems previously developed throughout the community of Kalispell and the surrounding areas. Tying into Rails to Trails on the west end of Kalispell, it will provide access from the Core Area to both Kila and Somers. On the east end, the trail will meet up with the Woodland Park trail system and trails traveling south along Woodland Avenue and Willow Glen.  New paths under construction on the north end of Kalispell will be easily accessible from the Core Area trail.
Q. Why was a stoplight implemented at the base of the hill on Hwy 2?  Is that safe?

A. In fact, the Montana Department of Transportation had already identified this area as one that required a stoplight in order to increase safety. That coupled with the development of an industrial park with its main access on Highway 2 East the new traffic light is an obligation to protect the safety of all travelers.  With the implementation of proper signage and modern technology already in use in other areas of Kalispell, drivers are given ample time to slow and stop for the signal.
Q. What kind of development will the Core Area attract?

A. A main goal of the Core & Rail Redevelopment is to create an urban center in the Core Area. We anticipate the development of high-density housing such as condos geared toward a variety of lifestyles and ages complimented by a vibrant new mix of retail, restaurant, and entertainment options. The focus of the Core Area will be creating a place where people of all ages can live, work and recreate.
Q. How will the trail cross over city streets?

A. The exact layout for how the trail will cross over city streets is still under development by traffic engineers. During this development phase, the public is welcome to offer suggestions and learn more about the process. Contact Katharine King at kking@kalispell.com with questions or suggestions.
Sykes Market offers groceries, wine, beer and an extensive deli in downtown Kalispell
Q. Will the new Glacier Rail Park increase the number of trains on the rail short line?

A. The frequency of trains is not anticipated to change. Instead, to improve productivity and limit disruptions, the number of cars per train may increase as the need for rail transportation grows.
Kalispell has an abundance of parks scattered throughout the city for its residents to enjoy
Q. Is there any grant money to help me to redevelop my Core Area property?

A. Let us connect you with the Urban Renewal Agency at the City of Kalispell to find out if your project qualifies for grant programs. Although resources are limited, it is always wise to ask and find out what may be available to you.  Visit http://www.kalispell.com/community_economic_development/community_development.php to learn more.

In addition to grants, the City of Kalispell provides revolving loan funds for eligible businesses and this resource will be available for Core Area Development. If you have a property that may be contaminated, the City may also have resources to assess the site and assist in attaining low interest loan options for clean up.
